In the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Puducherry on November 30, heavy rains have disrupted normalcy across the Union Territory and parts of Tamil Nadu. Although the cyclone weakened by Sunday (December 1, 2024), torrential downpours caused severe flooding, prompting the Army to assist in evacuating people stranded in waterlogged areas.

Holidays Declared for Educational Institutions

To ensure safety amid the adverse weather conditions, the Puducherry government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Monday, December 2, 2024.

In Tamil Nadu, similar measures have been taken:

  • Cuddalore and Villupuram districts: Holidays announced for schools and colleges.
  • Vellore and Ranipet districts: Schools alone will remain closed due to incessant rains.
  • Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Salem districts: Holidays declared for schools only.

Madras University Exams Postponed

The Controller of Examinations at Madras University has announced the postponement of exams scheduled for Monday, December 2, 2024. Revised dates will be communicated later.

Relief Efforts Underway

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been actively working to clear fallen trees and debris from roads in affected areas, as seen in Puducherry on December 1, 2024. The government continues to monitor the situation and take necessary actions to ensure public safety.
